Q. Regarding Dartmouth College Library AACR2 Cataloging Rule Adoption
Regarding Dartmouth College Library AACR2 Cataloging Rule Adoption Dear Dartmouth College Library,
Hi this is Joe (Pyung) Nahm and I am a PhD student at the Carlson School of Management of University of Minnesota.
I am currently engaged in a research project that examines the effect of AACR2 adoption of academic libraries on interdisciplinary research, with Professors Russell Funk of Minnesota and Raviv Murciano-Goroff of Boston University. We believe that the new cataloging rule (AACR2) might have influenced the type of journals that researchers cite as the rule reshelved journals into different locations.
I have done background research on the history of AACR2 and found that the Library of Congress has postponed adoption of AACR2 twice before finally adopting in 1981. I also found that these postponements might have produced differences in when academic libraries implemented AACR2. For instance, University of Illinois expected eventual adoption of AACR2 by the Library of Congress and therefore implemented it in 1980, before the Library of Congress adoption. On the other hand, University of Minnesota did not adopt AACR2 until 1984.
We are trying to figure out exact years of when each university library system implemented AACR2. Would it be possible to share any information on the dates or years of when your university library implemented AACR2?
Thank you for reading this long email and please let me know if anything is unclear.
Hello, after consulting with my colleagues who were working in Cataloging at that time, I can confirm that the Dartmouth College Library adopted AACR2 in 1982.
